Bacteriostatic water for injections is sterile pyrogen-free water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol and 0.9% NaCl.

Its main use is to dissolve drugs with a container that can be reinserted several times, while benzyl alcohol suppresses or stops the growth of most potentially contaminating bacteria.

Bacteriostatic water is used by athletes to dilute medicines that can be given later by intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injection.

Bacteriostatic water is a preparation designed exclusively for parenteral use only after the addition of drugs that require dilution or which must be dissolved in a vehicle before injection.

It is important to know that if bacteriostatic water is injected intravenously without any dilution, it can cause some red blood cell lysis and several side effects including fever, abscesses, venous thrombosis, or phlebitis, tissue necrosis, and infections.
